CharityCare Grant

The Healthcare Chaplaincy is dedicated to caring for persons in spirit, mind and body. For forty-five years we have been educating chaplains and providing chaplaincy services to area hospitals and other healthcare institutions. The financial support of these institutions has been essential in the provision of such chaplaincy services. Now, for the first time, as part of our strategic plan for the future of The Healthcare Chaplaincy, we have established a fund that would provide support for professional pastoral care and chaplaincy services to community healthcare organizations that otherwise could not afford them. Some examples of services which would be considered for funding include professional pastoral care staffing, skills and training upgrade of existing chaplaincy staff, or an assessment of needs for of pastoral care services in an organization.

The overall goal of CharityCare is to broaden our care for persons in spirit, mind and body to those who are being served by organizations with severely limited means.

What type of organization is eligible for this grant?

Any health/social/welfare organizations with a 501(c) 3 designation in the New York metropolitan area. Typically, grants will be awarded to smaller, community-based organizations.

How large would a grant be?

On average, grants will be below $25,000.

How does my organization apply?

There is no formal application form. An organization wishing to make a request may do so by sending a letter of inquiry signed by a senior corporate officer of the institution seeking support. The letter of inquiry should not exceed 1 page and contain the following information:

  1. History and Purpose of the Organization including proof of 501(c)3 status
  2. How grant will be used (i.e., professional pastoral care staffing, pastoral care training for existing staff, assessment of pastoral care needs of organization)
  3. Amount of funding being requested

Following receipt of the letter of inquiry, representative(s) of the organization may be invited to meet with a member of the Grant Evaluation committee, either at the site or at The HealthCare Chaplaincy.

Following a review of the letter of inquiry and/or face-to-face meeting, select organizations will be invited to submit a full proposal request not to exceed 5 pages. It should provide a brief but specific statement of the project for which support is sought, and addresses the following questions, goals and objectives:

  1. Describe in detail, how the funds will programmatically be used.
  2. Are there defined goals that the organization wishes to accomplish with these funds? How will the organization determine whether these goals have been met?
  3. Does the organization intend to continue the program/service once start-up funding from The Chaplaincy has ended? If so, how?
  4. Please provide a detailed operating budget for the program/service being proposed and any in-kind contributions which will be made by the grantee. The Budget should propose a 12 month operating cycle.

Additional information to be included with the grant proposal: (to be submitted by mail)

1. Current Year Operating Budget signed by the Chief Financial Officer
2. Audited financial statements
3. Annual Report
4. Listing of the Board of Directors/Trustees

What is the Grant Cycle?

The Chaplaincy will review grants twice a year. All inquiries will be considered within the following timetable:

Task Time Schedule
Submission of Letter of Inquiry No later than March 1 or September 1
Select organizations to submit a formal grant proposal April 15 or October 15
Notification of award to CharityCare recipient(s) June 1 or December 1

There is a time limitation of two (2) years for grantees to fulfill the grant terms. The schedule of grant payments can be customized to support the specific proposal. Grantees are expected to provide interim reports to The Chaplaincy describing the progress being made toward fulfillment of the grant objectives.

All grant applicants will be notified of The Healthcare Chaplaincy’s decisions. We receive a great many more qualified requests than The Chaplaincy has the financial resources to support. Consequently, many worthy requests must be declined.

One (1) Copy of the Letter of Inquiry and accompanying documents are to be sent to (Narrative may be submitted by e-mail):
