Chaplaincy Briefs


The Rev. Robert G. Anderson (New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Center) was installed to a specialized ministry as CPE supervisor and staff chaplain by the Reformed Church in America, Classis of New York, in a ceremony held in the hospital's Cofer Chapel in June.

The Rev. Johnny Bush (HealthCare Chaplaincy) made a presentation on Culturally Competent Supervision from an African-American Perspective at the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) 2000 Conference in Washington, D.C. in May.

The Rev. Denise Haines (HealthCare Chaplaincy) has been promoted to a new management position as Director of Education and Community Outreach. In addition to overseeing all education and community outreach activities, she will serve as a principal spokesperson for The Chaplaincy and its educational mission. She presented the Distinguished Service award to a former Chaplaincy staffer, the Rev. Dr. Joan Hemenway, at the ACPE conference in May. She also presented a keynote address on Technology and Education.

The Rev. Curtis Hart (New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Center) and members of the Department of Pastoral Care and Education gave a Grand Rounds presentation entitled, Pastoral Care of the Psychiatric Patient: Present Realities and Future Possibilities, at the hospital's Westchester Division in May. Panelists included Chaplain Hart, the Rev. Robert Anderson, and Rabbi Stephen Roberts of the hospital's Weill Cornell Center, and Chaplains Amy Jean Manierre, and Barbara Yeager of the Westchester Division. Glen Milstein, Ph.D., of the Department of Psychiatry also participated; he will receive the Wholeness of Life Award this November 8th at The Chaplaincy's annual benefit. Chaplain Hart was also a panelist for a training program of the New York Citizens' Committee on Health Care Ethics entitled, Strengthening the Process of the Health Care Agency: Citizen to Citizen. Joseph J. Fins, M.D., The Chaplaincy's ethicist-in-residence, also participated in the program.

Imam Yusuf H. Hasan (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center) participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for Marymount Manhattan College's first residential facility in April. Imam Hasan is a Marymount alumnus. In July, Imam Hasan and the Rev. Trudi Jinpu Hirsch (Beth Israel Medical Center) made a presentation on end-of-life issues and palliative care to clinical and administrative staff at Calvary Hospital.

Rabbi Israel Kestenbaum (Jewish Institute for Pastoral Care) and the Rev. Ann Williams (Beth Israel Medical Center) served as panelists during a one-day interfaith conference entitled, Decisions and Care at the End of Life: New Challenges for Clergy, held at the Interchurch Center in May. The conference was sponsored by Partnership for Caring in consultation with the Committee on Bioethical Issues of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

 

Rabbi Stephen Roberts (New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Center) was appointed to the five-member national executive leadership of the National Red Cross Air Disaster Response Team‹Spiritual Care. He recently participated in the Rabbis' Forum of the Jewish Alcoholics, Chemically Dependent Persons and Significant Others (JACS) 12th Annual Spiritual Day, Counting the Steps to Spiritual Renewal, sponsored by UJA-Federation and the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services.

Rabbi Stephen Shulman (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center) led a Purim celebration for patients, family members, and staff. Volunteers from the Lisker congregation, organized by Rebetzen Judith Friedlander, provided Purim gifts and entertainment.

Rabbi Jeffrey Silberman has been appointed as the Director of Pastoral Care and Education at Beth Israel Medical Center, replacing Rabbi Mychal Springer, who has joined the Jewish Institute for Pastoral Care as Associate Director.

The Rev. Paul Steinke (New York University Hospital) and Chaplaincy residents Ummi Nur Ali and the Rev. Damien Mu-Gun Chong, S.J. gave a presentation on the spiritual care of persons of diverse religious and spiritual beliefs to staff at the Aging and Dementia Research Center of New York University School of Medicine. Chaplain Steinke's Department of Pastoral Care and Education also welcomed its first undergraduate summer intern studying under the auspices of the NYU Health Careers Opportunity Program.

Rabbi Bonita E. Taylor (Jewish Institute for Pastoral Care) presented a paper on Culturally Competent Supervision from a Jewish Perspective at the ACPE 2000 Conference in Washington, D.C. She also delivered the invocation at the Fordham Graduate School of Business graduation ceremonies. She was recently published in Highlights for Children and The Journal of Pastoral Care. The Rev. Dr. Andrew J. Weaver has joined The Chaplaincy staff as co-director of pastoral research.
