Director, Research
The Spears Pastoral Research Center and Library has published over 60 articles in recent years and The Chaplaincy has an impressive record of successful fund raising in support of its research program. The new Director will define and implement the research agenda of the Spears Pastoral Research Center and Library and ensure the widespread dissemination of new knowledge to support the ministry and professional development of multifaith chaplains. Working with senior colleagues at The Chaplaincy, the Director leads a team of research professionals, including post-doctoral fellows, librarian and support staff. He or she reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and should be eligible for appointment as associate or full professor to the Graduate Faculty of Pastoral Education and Research.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as principal in the design and conduct of an innovative research agenda to advance The Chaplaincy’s international reputation as a leader in pastoral care, education and research.
- Keep abreast of emerging trends and issues in pastoral care, palliative care, end of life, acute and long-term care, spirituality and health, and community-based healthcare, translating such into new research ideas.
- Define and manage research projects so they can be assessed in terms of timelines and measurable outcomes.
- Develop new initiatives in program evaluation, such as reliable metrics to establish performance benchmarks for chaplains as well as assessment tools to evaluate CPE programs and products.
- Stimulate interest, foster excitement and encourage collaborative research among staff chaplains, CPE supervisors and students.
- Develop a research curriculum for CPE supervisors, in cooperation with the Director of the Center for Clinical Pastoral Education.
- Train future researchers and clinicians using both experiential and didactic methods.
- Provide research topics for Grand Rounds and other educational forums.
- Work with chaplains to integrate research into their clinical responsibilities and to become effective research partners in others’ studies.
- Develop requests for funding of research projects, in collaboration with the Vice President of Advancement and senior staff.
- Provide timely updates to foundations and major donors.
- Develop new proposals, including cultivation of foundations and donors.
- Promote research partnerships with leading academic and medical institutions.
- Co-author studies with researchers from prominent academic and medical institutions.
- Identify new academic and medical institutions for collaborative efforts.
- Communicate research findings to print and electronic media.
- Cultivate relationships with editors of print and electronic media.
- Monitor submissions and develop strategies to increase publication of research findings.
- Present at major research conferences.
Management Responsibilities
- Provide supervision and timely feedback to subordinates.
- Develop and manage the research budget according to funders’ and Chaplaincy policies.
- Provide regular reports to committees of the Board of Trustees.
Qualifications
We seek a creative researcher, program administrator and educator who brings a record of published, inventive research in spirituality and health. The ideal candidate will bring:
- Abiding interests in human culture, spirituality, aging, and healthcare as well as an earned doctorate in psychology, sociology of religion, pastoral counseling, religious studies, or a cognate discipline
- Advanced skills in qualitative and quantitative methods, including survey design and analysis, multivariate statistics, and program evaluation
- Five years of grant management, including successful identification of funding opportunities, proposal writing and presentation, and budget management
- Five years of administrative or supervisory experience
- Knowledge of public and private funding agencies and foundations, and their grant-making guidelines
- Teaching and/or clinical experience preferred
- Superior skills as a writer, teacher and public speaker
- Comfort with, and skill at, collaborative projects with other offices as well as external partners
