Clinical Pastoral Education

HealthCare Chaplaincy is a trail-blazer in the field of Clinical Pastoral Education. Accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, the Chaplaincy provides basic and advanced clinical pastoral education within a diverse network of health care institutional and community-based settings.  Its students come from around the world and represent all of the world’s major religious traditions. From 2006-09, twenty-five percent of enrolled students were international students.

In 2008, the Chaplaincy established a postgraduate College of Pastoral Care to integrate its academic programs and further its mission to advance and strengthen the profession of pastoral care.  The College will:

  • Increase the number of astutely-educated scholars, educators, and leaders;
  • Expand understanding and skills among allied health professionals and others of the importance of spiritual care in health through its research and practice-based courses;
  • Promote integration between academic and clinical education and research.

The College of Pastoral Care consists of four departments:

Department of Clinical Pastoral Education
Department of Continuing and Professional Studies
Department of Studies in Jewish Pastoral Care
Department of Palliative Education (in formation)

Over the next five years, The College plans to:

  • Develop doctoral and other post-graduate programs in collaboration with a leading university in New York City;
  • Initiate certification courses for pastoral care managers and directors;
  • Continue its academic programs to educate religious professionals and others in clinical chaplaincy;
  • Develop new programs in palliative education for health care professionals;
  • Promote research and education on specific issues related to pastoral care in Judaism
  • Develop courses in spiritual care and health for health care professionals and other consumers.
